Excursion to the Monastery of St. Syril of the White lake and museum of icons

The harsh beauty of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, erected on the shore of Lake Siversky, amazes tourists. The legent says that the founder of the Monastery the monk Cyril was strict and humble, independent and meek. He came to these places in 1397, dug a cave and devoted his days to work and prayer. Soon, five more monks joined him, and after 30 years, their number reached 53. Over time, the monastery became a major economic center: the trade route to the White Sea went through it. By the 16th century, the monastery had become one of the most important libraries: 210 manuscripts were stored here. The history of the monastery is closely connected with the name of Basil III, who visited it more than once. Here, in 1528, he prayed with his wife for the gift of an heir. Two years later, Ivan the Terrible was born. The stone monastery walls that you will see were built by the end of the XVII century. But on the territory of the monastery there are many more ancient structures.

Arrival in Yaroslavl

Yaroslavl is one of the oldest Russian cities, the unspoken capital of the Golden Ring of Russia.

Population: ~ 609,000 (as of 2018).

Time: Moscow time.

Yaroslavl, which recently celebrated its millennium, is one of the most popular tourist cities.

If you believe the legends, at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosli, Yaroslav the Wise once killed a bear and ordered the founding of the city. During its long history, Yaroslavl was both an inconspicuous city on the border of the principalities, and one of the cultural and commercial centers, and even (albeit for a short time) the capital of our state.

In memory of its former greatness, Yaroslavl has preserved a huge number of architectural monuments that are included in the UNESCO Heritage List. There are more than 800 of them — it is not surprising that the city is called an open-air museum.

It's a very cinematic city. The first psychological thriller "Drama on the Volga" was filmed here in 1913! And also-scenes of the first Soviet disaster film "Crew", "Big Change", "Afonya" and many more TV series and films.

Places to visit

The river station is located in the historical center of the city. Therefore, if you want, you can go on an independent acquaintance with Yaroslavl. We recommend a walk along the Volga Embankment, one of the most beautiful in Russia, with flower beds and singing fountains. There is also an Art museum located in the former governor's mansion. Under this roof once hosted lavish balls, and now it houses the largest collection of icons and works by famous painters: Bryullov, Kramskoy, Repin, Kustodiev.

A little further along the embankment — the Assumption Cathedral and the park "Strelka". This is an amazing place in the city, surrounded on three sides by water: on the one hand, the Volga flows past it, and on the other — Kotorosl.

Continuing the way, you will find yourself at the walls of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery. In our time, there are no monks living here, the monastery is completely given over to a museum where you can learn about ancient Russian art. By the way, it is to the Holy Transfiguration Monastery that we owe the "Word about Igor's Regiment" - the chronicle was found in these walls.

During a visit to Yaroslavl, you should pay attention to the Church of St. John the Baptist in Tolchkov, depicted on a bill of 1,000 rubles. And also visit the Volkov Drama Theater — the oldest in our country.

Young travelers may be interested in the Yaroslavl zoo.

If you have time, we advise you to go on an excursion to "Karabikha" - the picturesque estate of Nekrasov, where he wrote famous poems.

What souvenirs to choose

From Yaroslavl, you should bring ceramic products or a "Chaika" watch. We also recommend you to try poshekhonsky cheese, which is made here since the middle of the XIX century, and balsam "Old Yaroslavl".

Bus city tour

Yaroslavl has been standing for more than a thousand years. According to legend, it was founded by Yaroslav the Wise on the place where he defeated the bear. Experts say that this is just a beautiful legend. And the residents of the city point to the city coat of arms, which flaunts this wild animal.

In our time, Yaroslavl is a museum city that has preserved a huge number of architectural monuments. Travelers will visit the ancient Bogoyavlenskaya Square and learn the history of the oldest theater in Russia. Admire the Assumption Cathedral, built near the arrow of the Volga and Kotorosli rivers, and visit the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, whose walls have repeatedly protected the city since the XII century. Every tourist has heard about this monastery in the lessons of not only history, but also literature: here in the XVIII century they found "The Word about Igor's Regiment".

Travelers will surely be amazed by the Church of St. John the Baptist, which is considered the most artistic Yaroslavl temple. By the way, its outlines will seem familiar even to those who have not been to Yaroslavl before: it is she who adorns the 1000-ruble bill.

Arrival in Uglich

Uglich, one of the oldest cities on the Volga, was founded in 937, where the river makes a sharp turn, forming a corner. Perhaps this feature gave the city its name.

Population: ~ 32,000 (as of 2017).

Time: Moscow time.

Uglich is a popular tourist destination and is included in most weekend cruises from Moscow.

You can get here by bus or car, but it is more convenient - by boat. First, it's just comfortable. Secondly, almost all the attractions are located near the pier: the so-called Kremlin, and museums, including the Museum of Hydropower. Here you can see a turbine that used to work at a power plant, a map that shows water stations in Russia, and even watch the process of generating energy.

Uglich has never been a big city. The attention of the whole country was drawn to it only once. In 1591, the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible, Tsarevich Dmitry, lived here, who allegedly accidentally died while playing with knives.

By the way, this event made an impression even on the famous writer Alexandre Dumas, who specially came to Uglich.

Places to visit

During the tour, you will get to the territory of the Kremlin. The fortress walls are not preserved, but there are old churches and princely chambers. The Ark ensemble, which is loved by citizens and tourists, also performs here. For tourists, a small program is performed free of charge.

There are more than 10 museums in this small town. And, in addition to the classic ones, there is, for example, the Park-Museum of the Fire Rooster or the Museum of Hydropower-an interactive complex where you can touch the exhibits with your hands.

What souvenirs to choose

A short walk from the pier, at the entrance to Victory Park, there is a souvenir market where you can choose something to remember yourself.

In addition, local watches are brought from Uglich — the local factory is the largest manufacturer in Russia. And we advise fans of dairy products to pay attention to the brand "From Uglich".

Walking city tour

You will get acquainted with the city of Uglich, its architecture and centuries-old history.

The walk starts with a visit to the Kremlin, located on the picturesque bank of the Volga River. On its territory, the prince's chambers, the oldest building in the city and one of the oldest examples of residential architecture in Russia have been preserved. Here stands the Transfiguration Cathedral, built in the XVIII century and painted by a group of artists led by a serf Timofey Medvedev. Travelers are always fascinated by the biblical scenes that adorn the walls and resemble the works of famous Italian artists of the Renaissance. The six-tiered iconostasis with unique icons of the XVII-XVIII centuries also deserves special attention.

The acquaintance with Uglich will continue in one of the monasteries.

This small city, which is part of the Golden Ring of Russia, has been loved by tourists for many years. Many of them return to Uglich again and again. What is the secret of its appeal? We suggest that you answer this question yourself after the tour.
